“Animals In Sky” by Miho Aoki

VISUAL ARTS

Techniques Ancient and Modern Bring Ideas to Life

Traditional ink drawings mingle with 3-D computer-generated images at the MTS Gallery this month in an exhibit by Miho Aoki, professor of computer art at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The transplant from Japan via the Lower 48 moved to Alaska in 2001. In “Visions,” she explores culture, place, history and language through visual symbols and text, using both Asian calligraphy ink and computer imagery.

One of the show’s three bodies of work involves rendering 3-D objects on the computer into two-dimensional images with colors and textures derived from photographs she took in Fairbanks. “If you look closely, you can see trees, clouds and buildings in Fairbanks,” she said.

Another piece includes digital images based on the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Star Catalog.

Though heady in intent, the images come across as playful and mysterious. See for yourself through Aug. 9 at the MTS Gallery, 3142 Mountain View Drive. The gallery is open from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Call 274-0156 for information.
